Erwin-Piscator-Haus: Marburg City Hall celebrates a fresh start

Das neue Kultur- und Veranstaltungszentrum liegt im Herzen der Stadt.

Marburg City Hall was reopened on June 4, 2016 following three years of construction, providing the university city with a modern, multipurpose cultural and event center. Named after the well-known Marburg theater director Erwin Piscator, the new city hall can accommodate up to 3,600 people. Drees & Sommer supported the city of Marburg during the remodeling of the cultural center.

In recent times, the building – which dates back to 1969 – has been mainly used by the Hessen State Theatre, as well as by the city’s events service. Marburg city council decided that remodeling was the best way to modernize the building and create more space. Except for the auditorium, the existing building was gutted and then completely refurbished and extended.

The remodeling increased the gross floor area by approximately 50 percent, as well as providing additional rooms of various sizes for other users. The building serves as a venue for cultural events, as well as for congresses, conferences and ceremonies. This will increase the number of attractions in the newly reopened Erwin-Piscator-Haus for citizens, business people, and visitors. In addition to the Hessen State Theatre, future users will include the sociocultural center ‘Kulturladen KFZ’, the Marburg Stadt und Land Tourismus GmbH (city and state tourism), and a new restaurant. New classrooms for the neighboring Martin Luther School were also added on the south side of the new building.

Renovations to the four-story building included an energy efficiency upgrade. Solar panels on the roof will provide additional power in the future, with the result that the building’s energy consumption is now some 30 percent below Energy Conservation Ordinance (EnEV) requirements. The design for the extension of the established building was by the Munich-based Hess/Talhof/Kusmierz architectural group. Drees & Sommer was responsible for project management. The experts supported the city of Marburg during the planning, tendering and realization phases of this exciting project.
