Drees & Sommer accompanies the construction of a sustainable data centre in Biere

Für seine nachhaltige Planung und Bauweise bekam das bestehende Cloud-Rechenzentrum in Biere 2014 das LEED-Gold-Zertifikat.

T-Systems International GmbH, Deutsche Telekom AG’s global ICT service provider, is expanding its cloud data centre in Biere, Saxony-Anhalt. Three more modules with around 5,400 m² of floor space as well as an additional functional building will be constructed there by 2018. The foundation-laying ceremony for the new data centre will take place on 12 September 2016. Drees & Sommer will be assisting construction development with project management, green building certification and lean construction management.

The data centre in Biere is already one of the largest in Germany and Europe. T-Systems is aiming to continue to expand its capacities with the new extension. The main reasons driving this are, first, the increasing demand for cloud services and, second, the increasing need for data security and operational reliability. The new building is therefore planned to be one and a half times as large as the existing building complex and completed within 23 months. In an initial construction phase in 2014, T-Systems previously built two structurally identical data centres in Magdeburg and Biere working on the twin-core principle.

Drees & Sommer provided T-Systems with comprehensive support during the initial construction phase. The specialist team has again been commissioned with project management in the second construction phase and will ensure that the project is completed within budget, on time and to the required quality standard. Drees & Sommer will be using lean construction management in order to optimise and speed up planning and construction processes. Moreover, the company’s engineering experts will be performing green building management and supervising the certification process in accordance with the LEED system. The aim here is to achieve the “Gold” certification level just as in the first construction phase.
