Sustainably inspired: The circular economy provides stimulus for site development

The new RAG Foundation and RAG AG (stock corporation) administration building at the Zollverein world heritage site is fit for the future with Cradle to Cradle (C2C). The new building is based on the latest sustainability standards in keeping with the C2C concept. Drees & Sommer is supporting the construction project by providing general technical planning services, and is integrating Cradle to Cradle concepts into planning with the help of circular Engineering.

Construction of the RAG Foundation and RAG AG administration building at the Zollverein world heritage site on the former coking plant site is planned to start in 2016. The owner of the building, which will be right next to the corporate headquarters of RAG Montan Immobilien and will also have “Im Welterbe” (‘On the Heritage Site’) in its address, is Projektgesellschaft Zollverein – Im Welterbe 10 Gmbh & Co.KG. Kölbl Kruse is the general contractor.

While planning will focus on the needs of users, the straightforward design means that the building is however adaptable and flexible in use. Optimal indoor climate is maintained by modern sustainable technologies based on an integrated energy supply system. Drees & Sommer is using circular engineering to integrate Cradle to Cradle concepts into the project. As part of the general technical planning service, the engineers are also responsible for structural engineering, building physics, facade planning and building services equipment. An expert team led by Aachen-based architectural firm kadawittfeldarchitektur will undertake architectural planning.
